Buying supplies for one person is easy. Buying for 40 people is where innocent phrases like “it only uses a few tabs” become mathematically expensive.
Fortunately, the right quantity takes three numbers: the number of participants, the number of tabs in one tested project and a small reserve for real life.
The group-project formula
Participants × tabs per sample × 1.10 = planning quantity
The extra 10% covers size adjustments, practice, swapped pieces and minor design changes. Use 15% for very young groups, open-ended designs or a brand-new project you have not led before.
Example: 24 students will each make an 18-tab bracelet.
24 × 18 × 1.10 = 475.2
Round up to at least 500 tabs. Never round a supply calculation down unless the final activity is “watch the last four students improvise.”
Start with a real sample
Internet estimates are useful, but one sample made with your actual pattern is better. Cord thickness, overlap, project size and student choices all affect quantity.

If the sample takes you 45 minutes while you already know the pattern, it is probably not a 30-minute activity for beginners. Supply planning and time planning are friends; invite both.

At 22 tabs each plus 10%: 20 × 22 × 1.10 = 484. Round to 500.
50 people making small flowers
At 8 tabs each plus 10%: 50 × 8 × 1.10 = 440. Round to 450 or 500.
100 people making three-tab keychains
At 3 tabs each plus 15%: 100 × 3 × 1.15 = 345. Round to 350 or 400.
Collaborative mural
Do not calculate per person. Make a one-square-foot sample, count its tabs, multiply by the mural’s area and add 10–15%.

Do not forget the other supplies
Tabs are only one line on the checklist. Multiply cord length, jump rings, key rings, beads and backing materials too. Add extra scissors and pliers based on how many stations can work at once.
Pre-cut cord when possible. Put each participant’s starting supply in a small cup or bag. Keep the reserve with the activity leader. If all 2,500 tabs go on the tables immediately, they stop being inventory and become atmosphere.
Plan for natural variation
Bulk packs contain real collected aluminum tabs, mostly silver with a small natural mix of colored pieces and normal variation in shape and finish. They are manually reviewed before packing but not washed, polished or sorted by color or style.
If every participant needs 20 closely matching tabs, include time for a simple selection step and keep unmatched pieces for open-ended art. Do not build a required color pattern around the expectation of hundreds of colored tabs.
